Recently, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ninghighlighted the smart construction of the Shantou–Meizhou Expressway expansion project (Shanmei Expressway), undertaken by Guangdong Provincial Communication Group. At the site of unmanned paving and rolling operations, there is no one in the cab. Steering wheels turn automatically, while the roller fleetmoves forward and backward in coordinated formation at a steady speed for repeated compaction. The construction site presents a futuristic scene of smart construction.
Unlike traditional operations plagued by high temperatures, intense physical demands, and safety risks from human-computer interactions, Shanmei Expressway has innovatively adopted unmanned paving and rolling technology. This marks a key step forward in intelligent pavement construction for the project. "Relying on the Beidou high-precision positioning system, the machine fleet controls rolling track down to an accuracy of three centimeters. This effectively prevents common manual-driving issues such as missed-compaction, over-compaction, and under-compaction, significantly enhancing on-site safety and stability. At the same time, it substantially reduces occupational disease risks faced by frontline workers from long-term manual operation of rolling equipment," explained a project representative from the Shanmei Expressway project.

Statistics show that the technology has delivered tangible results: labor costs have been cut by 62%, and the overall operational efficiency has increased by approximately 50%. Paving uniformity, compactness and surface flatness have been comprehensively improved, providing more reliable technical support for the quality of pavement engineering. "This system integrates visual recognition and high-precision positioning technologies, equipping rollers with precise zero-edge compaction capabilities that prevent missing compaction and eliminate edge scratching," said on-site staff.
The system automatically controls the equipment's driving speed and number of compaction passes based on real-time data, ensuring standard compaction while greatly improving pavement uniformity.
