Huangpu District in Guangzhou: A New Model for "Happy Rivers and Lakes" Development
City Life | Guangzhou’s Huangpu District has been included in the first batch of pilot programs for comprehensive "Happy Rivers and Lakes" development across county-level jurisdictions, marking a shift from scattered demonstration sites to a systematic, area-wide approach.
Leveraging the river and lake chief system, Huangpu has tackled over 1,300 pollution sources and removed 105 illegal structures affecting waterways. Water quality has improved to Grade III standards, with some water bodies reaching Grade II.
Water management here serves not only ecological goals, but also economic and social development. In areas such as Jingxia Village and Huangma Community, integrated rural revitalization corridors combining agriculture, culture, and tourism are gaining momentum. These initiatives connect key sites including the Nangang River “Happy Rivers and Lakes” Exhibition Hall, water conservation education bases, and Guangzhou’s Water Law Promotion Park—forming a distinctive water culture corridor in Huangpu.
