On January 10th, 2026, the New Year concert titled "Music Connects Past and Present, Family Blends East and West" will be held at the Xinghai Concert Hall in Guangzhou. Austrian-Chinese pianist Huihui Weng-Skweres, along with her husband, Polish cellist Piotr Skweres, and their 8-year-old son, Sebastian Weng-Skweres, will take the stage together for a musical journey that transcends both regions and eras in collaboration with the Guangzhou Chamber Orchestra.

The concert will feature seven musical pieces, beginning with traditional Cantonese music and moving on to Western classical compositions. Huihui Weng-Skweres explained that the structure of the program closely aligns with the theme of the concert: the East-West fusion reflects her and her husband's cultural backgrounds, and the pairing of works from different eras embodies the "past and present" concept. "Cross-culture and cross-era is the theme we want to convey," she said.

Unlike many musical families, this marks not only a collaboration between the parents but also the first time the entire family will perform together on a major public stage. Weng admitted that while she and her husband have each performed extensively and collaborated many times, "bringing our son on stage" is a first and the family's most anticipated experience. "A couple of days ago, when discussing with my husband, he also felt this is the most anticipated tour of his life," she shared.

She added that while their son has often attended their performances as an audience member, standing on stage together for a public performance as a family holds extraordinary significance for them.

Why choose Guangzhou for this special family performance? Weng expressed with emotion that although she has long lived abroad and now holds foreign citizenship, she was born and raised in Guangzhou. Her son, born and raised overseas, has only visited the city briefly for family visits or travel. Thus, she hopes this experience will allow him to engage more directly with her cultural heritage.
