In Fiji, coronary heart disease affects many families, and patients are eager for more timely and effective treatment. In September 2025, the Health Commission of Guangdong Province dispatched a three-member expert team from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital to Fiji for a three-month medical aid program.

With the efforts of Guangdong doctors including Luo Songyuan, attending physician of Hypertension Research Unit, Department of Cardiology at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, the local hospital completed its first emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction in recent years. It also allowed local doctors to see, for the first time in their own catheterization lab, the feasibility of performing emergency interventions under local conditions.
At the Colonial War Memorial Hospital they supported, Safaka, head of the Cardiology Department, told reporters that there had originally been only one interventional cardiologist in Fiji's public health system. The arrival of the doctors from Guangdong meant far more than just an extra pair of hands.

Safaka mentioned that Dr. Luo had explained how such cases would be handled in China, drawing on their advanced experience in interventional procedures. He would then adapt those methods to the local conditions to develop feasible approaches, which Safaka emphasized was crucial for them.
In addition, Fiji has a high number of patients with lower-limb complications caused by diabetes. Luo Songyuan, together with vascular surgeons, completed Fiji's first stent implantation for dialysis catheter–related venous occlusion. Since then, whenever the hospital schedules a lower-limb vascular intervention, local doctors always ask, "Is Dr. Luo available today?" hoping he can join and provide guidance.
"I hope to do my utmost to pass on the surgical skills I have mastered to local doctors and help improve their treatment capabilities," Dr. Luo said. During his three months in Fiji, his top priorities are to perform more procedures and treat more patients. He also aims to leave behind some "things that cannot be taken away" by introducing local doctors to cutting-edge technical concepts from China and abroad.
