"I had surgery on one eye four years ago, and I've been waiting ever since for you to operate on my other eye," said a local patient to the Guangdong doctors at the Pacific Eye Institute in the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Fiji.
This November, the "Bright Journey" medical team from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University arrived in Fiji, with the Pacific Eye Institute in the Colonial War Memorial Hospital serving as the primary base for their work.

As soon as they arrived in Suva and dropped off their luggage, the team sprang into action. The team was divided into two groups. One group stayed in the outpatient consultation area to conduct screenings and registration, while another headed straight into the operating theatre to check instruments, microscopes and intraocular lens power one by one.
"The hospital opens at 7:00 AM, and our team arrived even earlier," said Wang Qiwei, an associate chief physician in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Genetics at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University. She noted that many patients were already waiting at the entrance since 6:00 AM.

That afternoon, on the first day of surgeries, the reporter found Wang in a small consultation room, busily going through patient numbers and the powers of the intraocular lenses. "In a single day I saw more than 60 patients. This might be what local doctors handle in an entire week," she said, surprised when she realized it was already nearly 5:00 PM.
Moreover, now on her third visit to Fiji, Wang has become good friends with the local doctors, and their collaboration has become even smoother. "We couldn't accomplish all this on our own. The local hospital's nurses and doctors are fully committed and perform their duties diligently. Although things are very busy and time is tight, we all try to make time to communicate more with them."
