Amid the modern skyline of Guangzhou's Tianhe Central Business District (CBD), the 38-year-old Liuyun residential community has been revitalized with a 30-meter-long hand-painted mural, turning into a new cultural landmark for locals. Built in 1987 to welcome the 6th National Games, the community has witnessed Tianhe's transformation from a sports venue into a thriving urban district, carrying Guangzhou's deep sports heritage and collective memories of the Games. As the 15th National Games in 2025 approach, Tianhe South Subdistrict has renovated the old walls into a "National Games Memory Gallery" through public art.

The Subdistrict has created a hand-painted mural that bridges eras, featuring mascots from major sports events held in Guangzhou: "Yangyang" (1987 National Games), "Weiwei" (2001 National Games), "Five Goats" (2010 Asian Games), and "Lerongrong" (2025 National Games). These mascots interact within scenes of Lingnan intangible heritage such as lion dance and dragon boat, creating a dialogue that bridges sports and culture across time.

Though still unfinished, the Memory Gallery has gone viral online, with discussions trending across social media platforms. Longtime residents visit to reminisce about the past, while younger visitors learn for the first time about Guangzhou's historic ties with the National Games and rediscover the connotation of the community. The wall has become a shared space where generations meet and interact, connecting the past and present while weaving together community memories.

The renovation integrates a National Games–themed initiative with community renewal, using public art to awaken collective memories. It not only beautifies the environment but also conveys the idea of "inheritance and development." Serving as a prelude to the 15th National Games, it highlights Tianhe's unique blend of historical depth and youthful vitality.

As the 15th National Games draw near, districts across Guangzhou are creating a festive atmosphere to welcome the event. The Memory Gallery project in Liuyun community vividly reflects this spirit, allowing residents to sense the excitement of the Games through the power of art.
