According to the Global Times, citing a report from Japan's Asahi Shimbun, on the afternoon of October 28, U.S. President Donald Trump, who was visiting Japan, arrived at the U.S. Yokosuka Base in Japan aboard the presidential helicopter Marine One, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The two then boarded the USS George Washington aircraft carrier and delivered speeches.
Trump first introduced Takaichi to the U.S. troops stationed in Japan, describing her as Japan's first female prime minister, before praising the U.S.-Japan alliance. After Trump finished speaking, Takaichi appeared excited, waving her right hand and turning her body in a circle to greet the audience.
A video of their interaction went viral on Japanese social media, with some netizens criticizing Takaichi's gestures as "exaggerated" and saying she "looks like a fervent supporter of Trump," which "embarrasses Japan."
Before the official event on the 28th, Takaichi and Trump also watched a Major League Baseball game, causing both to arrive eight minutes late for the event.
What further dissatisfied the Japanese public was Takaichi's announcement that Japan would bring forward its goal of increasing defense spending to 2% of GDP from 2027 to 2025, alongside reaffirming plans to invest $550 billion in the U.S.—a move seen as further squeezing public welfare expenditures.
Throughout Trump's visit, Takaichi's various actions were described by some Japanese netizens as "obsequious" and "exaggerated."
