On June 26th, the results of the selection of the 2024 "China's Intangible Cultural Heritage Person of the Year" were announced. Liu Yaqing, known as Jiang Xunqian (pseudonym) and followed by more than 20 million fans, was among those honored, drawing widespread attention. The post-95 content creator, originally from Hengyang City, Hunan Province, is the co-founder of Guangzhou Xunqian Culture Media and now resides in Guangzhou. Once a key animator, Jiang has become a prominent short-video blogger in the field of traditional culture.
Jiang Xunqian once spent days learning the Yingge Dance and performed with a Yingge troupe in Chaozhou's ancient city. Beyond that, she has learned to carve ice dragons, craft paper kites, and perform the spectacular art of Datiehua (literally "striking iron flowers"). After becoming the first female inheritor of the Datiehua, she formed the first all-female Datiehua team, earning praise from netizens for her "quick learning ability and dedication to everything she learns."
Jiang hopes to serve as a bridge between young people and intangible cultural heritage (ICH). She began studying painting as a child. Though she did not get into her dream art school, she never gave up her passion for art. Inspired by her grandfather, a lover of Peking Opera, she also fell in love with the art form and studied it for six years at the Guangzhou Youth Peking Opera Club. In 2019, she quit her job to become a freelance key animator and started posting short videos on Douyin that November, beginning with food and sugar painting before connecting with more ICH practitioners. She believes ICH is closely tied to everyday life, just largely forgotten by the public, so her videos focus on these endangered traditional techniques.
Driven by this belief, Jiang has traveled widely to learn from masters, telling the stories of dozens of traditional crafts and hundreds of heritage bearers through short videos, bringing endangered cultural heritage to the public. As of this writing, her Douyin account has accumulated over 22 million followers.
Today, more and more young people born in the 1990s and 2000s are becoming a new force in the inheritance and promotion of ICH with the help of social media platforms. According to the "Douyin 2025 Intangible Cultural Heritage Data Report", over the past year, more than 200 million new videos related to national-level ICH have been posted, with 14 million netizens sharing their ICH experiences, generating a staggering 749.9 billion views. The number of national-level ICH inheritors under 30 and creators after 00s posting ICH content on Douyin has also seen significant growth.
