Last September, the Guangdong Tourism Development Conference was convened, where 20 key tourism projects were signed on-site, with a total investment of 54.8 billion yuan. By the end of February this year, cumulative investment reached 670 million yuan, a 43% increase compared to the end of the previous year.

Rural tourism grows in popularity

In 2024, Guangdong actively developed rural tourism. Data shows that the province received over 500 million rural tourism visitors, generating a revenue of 379.9 billion yuan, up 11% and 23% year-on-year, respectively.

Cultural and tourism industry thrives

Throughout 2024, Guangdong continued to launch year-round cultural and tourism consumption promotion events. Notably, branded events such as "Celebrate the Chinese New Year in Guangdong" were launched. During last year's Chinese New Year, Guangdong welcomed 76.07 million tourists, achieving a tourism revenue of 69.4 billion yuan. This year saw even higher numbers, with 80.12 million visitors and a tourism revenue of 74.5 billion yuan, setting a record high for holiday periods.

Additionally, Guangdong approved 546 large-scale commercial performances last year, offered over 2 million discounted flight tickets, distributed 2.5 million discounted admission tickets, and hosted 1,422 cultural performances in scenic areas. These efforts drove 160 million self-driving trips to rural areas and tourist attractions.

Cultural heritage shines bright

Over the past year, Guangdong has deeply implemented the early Lingnan origin-tracing project, enhancing archaeological investigations and excavations at sites such as the Modaoshan site in Yunfu and the Qingtang site in Qingyuan, unearthing over 1,200 significant cultural relics. Guangdong also confirmed the "Nan'ao No. 2" as a Yuan Dynasty shipwreck. Meanwhile, the Guangdong Museum was selected as a national-level key museum jointly created by the central and local governments, and the "Chaozhou Embroidery Ancient City" was included in the second batch of demonstration zones for the protection and use of cultural heritage.

Notably, Jieyang has been exploring ways to rejuvenate Yingge dance, a traditional folk dance, which has gained widespread attention after being featured on the Spring Festival Gala and performed internationally. The city has also constructed the Yingge Cultural Center, established the Puning Nanshan Yingge Heritage Base, and hosted immersive Yingge cultural parades, attracting tourists to experience the charm of Yingge dance in Jieyang.

Artistic creation flourishes

In 2024, Guangdong ensured that the proportion of public libraries, cultural centers, and cultural stations at or above the second level reached 86%, 94%, and 99%, respectively. It also produced a series of high-quality works, including the musical "I Am What I Am (Cantonese Version)", the dance drama "Blooming Life", the symphony "To the Light", the Hakka musical "Han Shan", and the Guangdong opera "Princess Cheung Ping·An Obsession".
