On January 22nd, 2025, at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, the "Reunion Dinner for Chinese New Year" made its debut in the Lion City, featuring eight classic Cantonese dishes. The event, co-hosted by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Singapore and the World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry, attracted over 200 political and business leaders, including Chinese Ambassador to Singapore Cao Zhongming.
The culinary team was led by Wu Haifeng, the executive chef of Guangzhou's Lian Xiang Lou Restaurant, and included chefs from renowned dining brands like Jin Guang Ge Wang. They presented signature dishes from Dongguan, Zhongshan, Shenzhen, and Hainan, showcasing the unique charm of Chinese cuisine and promoting Cantonese culture to the world.
As the world's fourth-largest international financial center, Singapore's multicultural environment provides an ideal platform for the internationalization of Cantonese cuisine. According to the "2024 China Catering Overseas Development Report", Singapore has become a key gateway for Chinese restaurant brands, with many expanding into Southeast Asia through here. With approximately 50,000 dining establishments in Singapore, Chinese cuisine accounts for about 5% of the market.
Wu stated, "Cantonese cuisine is not just about food; it is an important carrier of Cantonese culture. Through each dish, we showcase the refinement and craftsmanship of Cantonese cuisine, allowing more people to understand Cantonese culture". He emphasized that the global expansion of Cantonese cuisine represents both an opportunity for the catering industry and a bridge for cultural exchange.
A representative from the Guangzhou Municipal Commerce Bureau's trade services department stated, "The dedication of Cantonese chefs to preserving traditional techniques while innovating ensures that 'Eating in Guangzhou' remains timeless and vibrant." He noted that the " Reunion Dinner for Chinese New Year" not only promotes cultural promotion and industrial collaboration but also amplifies the influence of Cantonese cuisine through Singapore's international platform.
