On February 18th, "Ne Zha: Demon Child Conquers the Sea" ("Ne Zha 2") surpassed a cumulative box office of 12.319 billion yuan, becoming the global box office champion for animated films. Guangdong topped the box office rankings among provinces with 1.289 billion yuan, accounting for 10.57% of the national box office. Cities like Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Foshan performed outstandingly.
As the largest province in China in terms of economic size and population, Guangdong already has a solid foundation in cultural consumption and immense potential. In 2024, Guangdong's total box office reached 5.266 billion yuan, and it has ranked as the "top box office" province in the country for 23 consecutive years. It also ranked first in total moviegoer numbers and the number of screenings nationwide.
Xie Kailai, an associate researcher at the Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, stated, "The consumer frenzy triggered by 'Ne Zha 2' has evolved into a popular cultural phenomenon, fully showcasing the potential and enthusiasm of Guangdong's cultural consumption." The long-term development of cinema infrastructure has also laid a solid foundation for Guangdong to better accommodate the massive influx of audiences drawn by "Ne Zha 2". In 2024, Guangdong built 87 new cinemas, ranking first in the country. Currently, the province has nearly 1,600 registered cinemas and over 10,000 screens, both of which are the highest in the nation.
At the Guangzhou Mei Ah Cineplex, moviegoer Mr. Huang shared, "I rarely choose to watch animated films during the Chinese New Year, so I missed 'Ne Zha 2'. Then, my colleague recommended it to me. I feel it was great." The cinema manager, Mr. Lu, mentioned that on weekdays, the number of moviegoers approaches 2,000, while on weekends, it nearly reaches 4,000. Guangdong's movie consumption market has been further activated by the large number of people returning to work, with the box office surpassing 1 billion yuan.
"Ne Zha 2" has not only boosted the movie market but also sparked a surge in sales of IP-related merchandise. In Guangzhou, several brand stores saw their "Ne Zha 2" products sold out as soon as they were launched. The sales of Pop Mart's blind box figurines exceeded 10 million yuan, with pre-sale dates already scheduled until June 2025. In Dongguan, Guangdong Henglitai Crafts Co., Ltd. reported that its order volume has increased by 5 to 10 times compared to before the festival, and the company is working overtime to produce related products.
