The Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year marks the grand finale of the Spring Festival celebrations. When vibrant lanterns light up the streets and households prepare delicious foods symbolizing reunion, the giant pandas "Mengmeng" and her cub "Meizhu" at Chimelong Safari Park are also celebrating with their own festive feast, enjoying a specially prepared "Yuanxiao" banquet.
In the Panda Paradise, nearly eight-month-old "Meizhu" reclines on her pink throne, her round little body looking particularly adorable. Her curious little eyes dart around, taking in the newly hung windmills and lanterns.
As the zookeeper serves the intricate reunion meal, "Meizhu" eagerly begins a lovely "eating show" with both her hands and feet. The pandas' favorite ingredients, such as carrots, bamboo shoots, and fruit chunks, have been transformed into custom Cantonese delicacies like "yuanxiao" (glutinous rice balls), Cantonese-style preserved meat and sausages, and seafood.
According to the zookeeper, "Meizhu" has become quite adept at eating. She can use her hands to grasp food and even employ her feet to pick up treats. During the New Year celebrations, they also indulge in traditional Cantonese snacks and have increased their activity frequencies. Visitors can see that "Meizhu" is looking much sturdier, reflecting a healthy "happy weight."
To enhance the fun of eating, zookeepers craft food into various shapes and hide it in toys or place it high up, such as on climbing structures and branches, encouraging the pandas to actively seek their meals.
Throughout the Chinese New Year, "Meizhu" has brought joy to countless visitors from across the country. One guest who visited Chimelong with family shared, "This Cantonese reunion feast is so lifelike. 'Meizhu' stands in front of a New Year painting and eats'yuanxiao', truly as adorable as a 'New Year picture doll.' Her interactions with her mother also fill us with a deep sense of happiness and love!" with adorable companions like "Meizhu," the festive atmosphere feels even more vibrant.
