On February 7th, the construction of the Shiziyang Channel, a major project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), fully resumed. A total of 1,600 workers are advancing construction at 32 work sites, including the Shiziyang grand bridge, the Nansha Avenue Tunnel, and the Fery Road. The key control project, the east and west anchorages of the Shiziyang grand bridge, have already reached a height of 86.5 meters.
As another world-class bridge in the GBA, the Shiziyang grand bridge adopts a double-deck steel truss suspension bridgedesign with a main span of 2,180 meters, enabling a "single span across the river." In terms of core equipment innovation, the world's largest tower crane, the R20000-720, is being used for precise lifting at the west main anchorage. This ultra-large flat-arm tower crane features a heavy-duty, modular structure design, enabling coordinated work between the main and auxiliary anchorages in a "one tower, three machines" configuration. It can install a 145-ton steel shell with an installation deviation controlled within 5 millimeters, reducing a process that originally took several hours to just one hour.
"We have tailored our approach to the unique characteristics of the project, further advancing intelligent construction for bridges over 2,000 meters, the iterative upgrade of the smart beam production line, and the digital transformation of the construction. We have developed and applied a series of new technologies, materials, equipment, and techniques, aiming to create a high-quality, high-efficiency composite highway channel while promoting the advancement of the bridge construction industry's supply chain. The project fully reflects the continuous enhancement of new quality productive forces in Guangdong's bridge construction," emphasized Xian Rong, Deputy General Manager of the Shiziyang Channel Project at Guangdong Transportation Group.
The main anchorages of the Shiziyang grand bridge have a height of 342 meters, and as of now, construction has reached segment T17, standing at a height of 86.5 meters. It is expected that by 2025, the height of the main anchorages will surpass 200 meters. Once completed, the bridge will form a composite "golden channel" connecting the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Estuary, accelerating the development of a 100-kilometer "Golden Inner Bay" around the Pearl River Estuary.
