On January 18th, a Guangdong New Year's Eve dinner experience event was held at the Guangzhou White Swan Hotel, inviting officials and their families from 41 consulates in Guangzhou, as well as cultural and tourism industry professionals. At the event, Guangcai(Cantonese porcelain) and Guangxiu (Cantonese embroidery) showcased the charm of Lingnan culture. In the dim sum experience area, the making of shrimp dumplings, siu mai, sesame twists, and tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) attracted many foreign guests. The tea art area, featuring Yingde black tea and Chaozhou single bush tea, also provided a unique sensory experience for the guests.
Justin Emptage, a Chinese-American child, after experiencing the intangible cultural heritage of Guangcai, said his favorite Chinese festival is the Spring Festival because he can "receive red envelopes with money(doulishi)." Justin's father, Mark Emptage, who has been in China for over a decade, said that the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner, where the whole family enjoys a meal together, is particularly touching to him. He has also invited friends and relatives from the United States to spend the New Year in Guangzhou. Justin's mother, Bi Wenji, said that during this Spring Festival, they will take the children to her hometown of Huadu District to experience the festive atmosphere.
During the event, a series of auspicious New Year Cantonese dishes were served one after another. The Roasted Suckling Pig Platter symbolizes good fortune and happiness, while the Fried Scallop with Cashew Nut & Celery represents family prosperity. When introducing the dishes, the hosts also shared Guangdong Spring Festival customs such as visiting flower markets and giving red envelopes, helping foreign guests to gain a deeper understanding of Guangdong's Spring Festival culture.
The successful application of the Chinese Spring Festival for UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage status has brought this traditional festival, carrying a thousand years of cultural heritage, to the international stage. "Come to Guangdong for the New Year" allows tourists from around the world to deeply experience Chinese traditional culture, taste authentic Chinese cuisine, and welcome the New Year together with the warm and hospitable people of Guangdong.
Starting from 2025, the National Immigration Administration has extended the transit visa-free stay period to 240 hours and expanded the number of applicable ports to 60. This policy upgrade provides foreign friends with more ample time and a broader space to experience China and also offers greater convenience for everyone to travel to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and celebrate theChinese New Year in Guangdong.
