Following the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and the Huangmaohai Cross-sea Passage, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA) is gearing up for the completion of another megaproject, the Lion Ocean (Shiziyang) Channel, as the year draws to a close. On December 20th, Guangdong Transportation Group announced that a key component of the Lion Ocean Channel project, the core filling construction of the East Anchorage of the Lion Ocean Bridge, has been successfully completed.
The Lion Ocean Bridge, the centerpiece of the channel, is designed as a double-deck steel truss suspension bridge with a main span of 2,180 meters. Upon completion, it is set to break five world records, including the longest main span for a suspension bridge, the number of lanes, and the height of the main towers, making it one of the most technologically challenging and intricately constructed bridges in the world. The anchorages, crucial for securing the main cables of a suspension bridge, directly impact the bridge's safety. The Lion Ocean Bridge features two anchorages, with the East Anchorage designed in a circular gravity style, reaching a total core filling height of 21.5 meters. Starting from July 8th of this year, after 164 days of relentless effort, the project team has completed the pouring of 192,000 cubic meters of concrete, totaling 476,000 tons of core filling, equivalent to the weight of six large aircraft carriers. A single continuous pour reached 18,000 cubic meters, setting a new engineering record.
With the completion of the East Anchorage's core filling, the West Anchorage is also in its final stretch, expected to be finished by the end of December. The successful construction of both anchorages will mark the transition of the Lion Ocean Channel's construction into the upper structure phase. Once completed, the project will open a new corridor for the integrated development of the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Estuary, playing a significant role in promoting the integrated and high-quality development of the Pearl River Estuary in the GBA and in creating a "golden inner bay" of 100 kilometers around the Pearl River Estuary.
