Narrative by Zhang Deyu:
I'm Zhang Deyu from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University.
I am at the China-Maldives Ophthalmology Center in Hulhumalé Hospital, Maldives. Today (December 11th, 2024) marks my seventh day in the Maldives.
Maldives is beautiful but lacks medical resources, Making eye surgeries difficult for localpatients with eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.
Local patients trust Chinese doctors greatly, and our arrival has increased hospital appointments.
We've learned a few key Dhivehi phrases, like "open your eyes," which we say as "LUO HU LU WA," facilitating communicationwith patients.
We are here to help local medical staff improve their professional skills with training and increased communication.
Last year, Drs. Chen Wan, Xiang Wu, and I worked here for six months, forming strong bonds with the local medical staff. It's comforting to be back.
Amid our busy work, our team leader Professor Chen Weirong shows great concern for our lives. She recently bought a large fish from the market, cooked it for us, and provided a delicious and affordable meal that filled us with a warm sense of happiness.
Since 2016, the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center team, led by Professor Chen Weirong, has conducted the "Bright Journey" program in the Maldives. In January 2020, the China-Maldives Ophthalmology Center was established.
On December 11th, 2024, Professor Lin Haotian, the president of the Sun Yat-sen University's Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, completed the 666th surgery for local patients by our team.
We'll soon return to China, but China-Maldives medical cooperation and the development of the China-Maldives Ophthalmology Center will persist.
