On December 11th, local time, the first glaucoma surgery in the Maldives was successfully performed by a team of doctors from Guangdong. On December 10th, the number of patients seeking eye consultations at the China-Maldives ophthalmology center in Hulhumale Hospital increased significantly. They knew that "Chinese experts have arrived again!"

On the 10th, the medical team from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University was busy diagnosing and conducting eye exams for local patients in the China-Maldives ophthalmology center. Dr. Chen Wan, Deputy Chief Physician of the Cataract Department and the assistant of the President of Hainan Ophthalmic Hospital, the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University, told reporters that 60 patients had made appointments that day. Many had made early reservations after learning that Chinese doctors would provide consultations.

Dr. Chen explained that local doctors in the Maldives are currently unable to perform glaucoma surgeries. Patients with glaucoma typically need to travel abroad for treatment. With the arrival of Chinese experts, many glaucoma patients came seeking treatment. On December 11th, the medical team successfully completed the first glaucoma surgery in the country.

From December 5th to 14th, with support and guidance from the National Health Commission of the PRC and the Health Commission of Guangdong Province, the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University and the Hulhumale Hospital launched the second phase of the China-Maldives ophthalmology center project. A team of 11 experts from Zhongshan University Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center arrived in the Maldives to provide medical services to thelocals.

In addition to the first glaucoma surgery, the medical team also performed dozens of cataract surgeries on local patients. The team brought 300 kilograms of medical supplies from Guangdong to the Maldives, including instruments, surgical consumables, and medicines.

当地时间12月11日，马尔代夫首例青光眼手术由广东医生完成！10日的马尔代夫胡鲁马累医院中马眼科中心内，预约检查眼睛的患者比往日多了不少，因为他们知道，“中国专家又来了！”

记者10日在中马眼科中心看到，来自中山大学中山眼科中心援外医疗队专家马不停蹄地为马尔代夫当地患者问诊、开展眼部检查。中山大学中山眼科中心海南眼科医院院长助理、白内障科副主任医师陈婉告诉记者，当天预约门诊的患者达60人，得知是中国医生来出诊，他们早早就预约好了。

陈婉介绍，在马尔代夫，本地医生的水平尚难以开展青光眼手术，当地青光眼患者需要出国才能完成。得知这次有中国专家来到当地，许多青光眼患者都慕名而来。12月11日，医疗队专家完成马尔代夫全国首例青光眼手术。

12月5日-14日，在国家、广东省卫生健康委的支持指导下，由中山大学中山眼科中心与马尔代夫胡鲁马累医院共同开展对口医院合作中马眼科中心项目第二期第五阶段工作，中山大学中山眼科中心援外医疗队共派出11名队员来到马尔代夫胡鲁马累医院，为当地居民开展医疗服务。

除了此次全国首例青光眼手术，医疗队队员也为当地患者开展了数十例白内障手术。此次援外，队员们从广东将大批医疗物资带到马尔代夫，包括仪器设备、手术耗材、药品等，重达300公斤。
