On the afternoon of December 2nd, at the "Understanding China through Sports" session of the 2024 Understanding China Conference (Guangzhou), Olympic judo champion Xian Dongmei, gymnastics champion Li Xiaopeng, shooting champion Yi Siling, and diving champion Luo Yutong shared their sports stories and collectively voiced their support for the upcoming 15th National Games, scheduled to be held in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2025.
Gymnastics Olympic champion Li Xiaopeng, who began practicing gymnastics at the age of five, has experienced both the heights and lows of his career. He has been promoting the development of sports since his retirement. Speaking about the upcoming 15th National Games, Li Xiaopeng expressed deep emotion. "I have an unbreakable bond with Guangdong since I won two gold medals at the ninth National Games held in Guangzhou. I am delighted that the National Games will return to Guangdong, and next year's 15th National Games will be hosted across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region. This is not only a sports event but also a great opportunity for the world to understand China," he said.
Shooting Olympic champion Yi Siling, who won the first gold medal at the London Olympics, has a profound connection with Guangdong. In Yi Siling's view, sports serve as an excellent window to understand China. On one hand, sports have brought a new engine for economic growth to the country. On the other hand, they contribute to improving the physical fitness and health levels of the citizens. More importantly, on a spiritual level, they help to enhance the nation's soft power and international image, showcasing the Chinese nation's spirit of struggle and unity to the international community.
Judo Olympic champion Xian Dongmei, who has interpreted her 21-year sports career with "passion," experienced multiple retirements and comebacks, returning to competition just three months after giving birth and winning gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. After retiring, she took up a position at the Ersha Training Center in Guangdong Province. "At this year's Paris Olympics, our center's athletes won eight gold medals," Xian Dongmei said with pride.
Diving Olympic champion Luo Yutong, who made his way from Guangdong to the world stage and won the championship at the London Olympics, also has a unique feeling about the upcoming 15th National Games to be held "at his doorstep." "When I first participated in the National Games, I was a naive teenager, only fourteen or fifteen years old. Now, I am involved in the National Games as a team manager. Different experiences can also continue our sports spirit and sports dreams," Luo said.
