On November 7th, the 2024 Top 100 Foreign-Invested Enterprises in Guangdong was unveiled. This event was the first supporting activity of the 2024 Global Investment Promotion Conference for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and marks the first time for Guangdong to publish a list of the top 100 foreign-invested enterprises. According to information shared at the event, in 2023, foreign-invested enterprises in Guangdong accounted for less than 3% of the total number of businesses in the province but contributed 21.4% of the province's tax revenue, 33.7% of foreign trade imports and exports, and 32.4% of the added value of industrial enterprises above designated size.
The list shows that the 100 enterprises have invested a total of 36.6 billion dollars in Guangdong, with each enterprise investing more than 100 million dollars. The foreign investors primarily come from 16 countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, Japan, and Singapore.
In terms of industry sectors, the manufacturing sector has the highest number of enterprises on the list (69 enterprises). Enterprises in industries such as next-generation information technology, advanced equipment manufacturing, biomedicine, green petrochemicals, new materials, and modern services make up 80% of the total. Over 70% of the enterprises are high-tech and knowledge-intensive enterprises.
"Having been in China for 139 years, BASF has experienced and witnessed the growth and transformation of China. We are honored to be a part of it." At the launching ceremony, this was stated by Marko Murtonen, Senior Vice President of BASF and General Manager of BASF Integrated Base (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., one of the top 100 foreign-invested enterprises.
The BASF Zhanjiang Integrated Base Project is China's first wholly foreign-owned project in the heavy chemical industry, officially launched in 2019. Marko Murtonen introduced that within less than three years since the project started, the first production facility has already been put into operation. BASF's products made in Zhanjiang began entering the South China market in September 2022, particularly in the automotive and electronics industries.
"I firmly believe that this will continue to be a hot investment destination for Chinese people and overseas Chinese around the world," said Yang Huan, Public Affairs Manager of Asia Symbol (Guangdong) Paper Co., Ltd., one of the top 100 foreign-invested enterprises.
Asia Symbol is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Singapore-based Royal Golden Eagle. It has been developing in Guangdong for over 20 years and has invested more than 13 billion yuan. It is reported that the three main business sectors of the Group-papermaking, nonwoven fabrics, and LNG clean energyhave all settled in Guangdong. Additionally, the Group is optimistic about China's economic development and acquired Vinda International for 26.1 billion Hong Kong dollars.
"With real investment and concrete actions, we demonstrate our determination and confidence in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," said Liu Xiao, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Asia Pacific at Tate & Lyle, one of the listed enterprises. As early as 2022, the global sugar industry giant Tate & Lyle fully acquired Quantum High-Techin Jiangmen, Guangdong, for 237 million dollars (about 1.6 billion yuan). This was Tate & Lyle's largest and most significant acquisition in recent years.
"One reason why foreign-invested enterprises are coming here is because they recognize the innovative environment of the Greater Bay Area. There are many leading companies, startups, and high-growth businesses that can attract talents. It's hard to find a place in the world with such a wealth of resources," said Li Jialin, Vice Chairman of KPMG China and Chief Partner for South China. He also noted that Guangdong's personal income tax incentives have attracted high-end global talents, providing strong intellectual support for the high-quality development of the professional services industry.
