It's back-to-school season again, and many freshmen are on the verge of entering university campuses. They are brimming with excitement about their new dormitories and roommates. However, there's also a concern among some students about the possibility of being paired with roommates with different lifestyles, which may lead to unnecessary conflicts. Thanks to the advancement in the management level of various universities, students can now conveniently use their smartphones to find like-minded roommates and the cozy residence they desire.

In recent days, the topic of many universities supporting students in selecting their own dormitories has sparked lively discussions among netizens. At institutions like Zhuhai College of Jilin University, students have the autonomy to choose their dormitory areas, floors, and room numbers. Many freshmen are utilizing platforms such as WeChat groups and confession walls to seek out like-minded roommates. Some students are passionate about fashion, enjoying laughter, shopping, and fully embracing the spirit of "enjoyment". Others adopt a more health-conscious approach, preferring a tranquil dormitory environment and hoping to find roommates for tea drinking and movie-watching during leisure time. To facilitate this process, freshmen create "personal resume posters" to introduce their lifestyles, personality traits, and even MBTI types, along with their contact information.

Liu, a student from the 2020 cohort at Zhuhai College of Jilin University, has experienced the "exciting" process of selecting her own dormitory. She explained, "The college plans the dormitory buildings, and each major further plans which specific dormitories are available for selection. Then, we choose our beds within these dormitories." She candidly stated that she doesn't have any specific living or sleeping habits and only has two non-negotiable requirements for roommates: no smoking and no pets. "Besides these two points, I'm open to negotiation!" Liu believes that the self-selection dormitory feature is beneficial for choosing roommates who share similar interests and compatible personalities. It also allows for setting rules with roommates in advance without the worry of affecting interpersonal relationships. However, she acknowledges that even though online communication is helpful, getting to know roommates in real life is still necessary to fully understand their true nature.

While new students at Zhuhai College of Jilin University are still "searching for teammates" on social media, freshmen at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China can already access an online self-selection dormitory platform to view information about their chosen roommates, including waking up habits, afternoon nap habits, bedtime habits, cleanliness, sleep quality, and more. With this single platform, convenience is maximized, making the process incredibly user-friendly.

Many new university students are enthusiastically discussing which dormitory to choose, leaving many other college students envious.

So, is it necessary for universities to open up pre-selection of dormitories? Yao Jinxin, the Director of the Admissions Office at Guangzhou College of Technology and Business, believes that opening up pre-selection of dormitories has a guiding role in resource allocation and other matters for new students. He thinks that pre-selecting dormitories allow students to understand the specific dormitory environment in advance and mentally prepare for their new life. More importantly, it allows them to establish emotional connections with roommates based on dormitory information, which helps them adapt and integrate into their new life more quickly and effectively after school starts.
