In bustling Beijing Road in Guangzhou, there is a sizable smart storage warehouse hiding in a building. After opening the door in its basement by scanning the QR code with a phone, you can find rows of bright yellow storage lockers. The smallest one is only 1.47 cubic meters, while the largest one is like a small room. They can be rented for a short month or even several years, and the monthly rent per cubic meter is around only a hundred yuan as a private storage space.
This "self-service storage" is called mini storage, which has been invented for more than twenty years and is especially popular in Hong Kong, where the land is very expensive. In 2017, Hong Kong entrepreneurs Gu Weilong and Felix Wong saw the potential of mini storage in the Chinese mainland market, so they went to Guangzhou to start their business and founded Kingkong Mini Storage, introducing this distinctly Hong Kong-style business to the Chinese mainland market.
Nowadays, Kingkong Mini Storage has nearly 70 branches in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Nanjing. When you enter King Kong Mini Storage, you can find that each bright yellow storage locker is printed with a QR code, which enables real-time data management and remote monitoring. "We have brought Hong Kong-style mini storage to the Chinese mainland and combined it with emerging technologies such as mobile internet and Internet of Things (IoT), hoping to open up a brand-new market," said Gu.
For Gu and Wong, Kingkong Mini Storage is not only the starting point of their entrepreneurship in the Chinese mainland but also a window for them to understand and know more about the Chinese mainland.
In Wong's view, the mini storage is not only an extension of space for individuals and families but also their unique emotional corner. "We also have users in their 70s who store their deceased spouse's clothing because they are afraid of being reminded of their beloved but unwilling to throw these things away; there are young users who transform a mini storage warehouse into a display cabinet for figures; some users put used textbooks and sneakers in them; there are also users who store unused items, leaving them there for two years."
Looking back at the beginning of his entrepreneurship, Gu believed that finding suitable institutions or groups to assist was very important for Kingkong Mini Storage to enter the track smoothly. "When we came to Guangzhou to start a business, we settled in Guangzhou Tianhe District Hong Kong-Macao Youth Association. At that time, we did not understand many regulations and procedures in the Chinese mainland, nor did we have experience, but with the help of the Youth Association and communication with a group of young Hong Kong entrepreneurs like us, we quickly adapted to the entrepreneurship environment in the Chinese mainland. A group of young Hong Kong and Macao entrepreneurs started a business together, sharing experiences, discussing difficulties they have met, and sharing happiness make me no longer feel lonely on the road of entrepreneurship."
Nowadays, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has become a fertile ground for Hong Kong and Macao entrepreneurs like Gu and Wong to pursue their dreams.
