In a vibrant display of Chinese traditions, Liede Village in Tianhe District, Guangzhou City, welcomed a multitude of dragon boats from neighboring villages on June 22nd. This auspicious day, which coincides with the traditional Chinese festival of Dragon Boat Festival, witnessed a spirited gathering of boats, fostering a sense of unity and heartfelt camaraderie among participants. Starting at 11 a.m., dragon boats from various neighboring villages gracefully traversed the Liede Creek, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and the synchronized movements of youthful flag bearers. The lively atmosphere was further enhanced as the boats swayed and danced, creating a captivating spectacle for onlookers.
Following the long-standing tradition, dragon boats from Guangzhou's villages would take turns visiting their neighboring villages since the first day of the fifth lunar month, strengthening their bonds and fostering friendship. In turn, each village plays host, inviting the visiting guests to partake in a sumptuous dragon boat feast. When a village visits its sister village, it is known as "Chen Jing", and when a village invites its sister village, it is known as "Zhao Jing".
Among the participants, one distinguished individual caught the attention of reporters. Mr. Li Dafu, a spirited 70-year-old man from Dali Town, Nanhai District, Foshan City, is the most experienced member of his village's dragon boat team. "We share the same ancestral roots with Liede Village and have maintained a tradition of mutual visits and kinship," Mr. Li Dafu expressed. He emphasized the significance of the dragon boat activities, highlighting their role in preserving fraternal bonds and upholding the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture.
Notably, the dragon boat teams comprise not only seasoned members but also enthusiastic young individuals. Among them is Cen Cankun, a 29-year-old from Miaotou Village, Suidong Street, Huangpu District, Guangzhou City. "We set off with two dragon boats around 8 a.m., and after about an hour's journey, we arrived in Liede," Cen Cankun shared. Steeped in tradition, Cen Cankun began participating in dragon boat races from a young age, influenced by his elders. Now, as an adult, he continues to embrace this annual tradition, visiting Liede Village during the Dragon Boat Festival. With an optimistic outlook, he added, "When I have a son in the future, I will pass down the tradition of dragon boat racing to him as well."
The preparations for the warm reception of visiting guests commenced early in the day, with the entire staff of Liede Village diligently engaged in their tasks. As customary, the village played host by providing the esteemed visitors with a special dragon boat feast. Chen Huijun, a guide of Liede Village, revealed that a staggering 468 tables were set up, estimating the attendance of approximately 5,000 guests. This grand feast marks the largest celebration since the village's relocation. In addition to the dragon boat feast, Liede Village also distributed dragon boat pastries to over 1,100 elderly individuals.
Reflecting on the spectacle unfolding before his eyes, Li, a resident of Yangji Village in Yuexiu District, expressed profound emotions. Li remarked on the romanticism inherent in witnessing such vivid displays of traditional culture, acknowledging it as an exclusive treasure of the Chinese people and a profound testament to the enduring legacy imprinted.
