On June 21st, the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics released the economic data for the first five months of 2023. The economic recovery in Guangdong has continued on a positive trajectory.

Industrial production sees a slight rebound

From January to May, the value added by large-scale industries in the province reached 1.55 trillion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 1.4%. This represents a 0.6 percentage point increase compared to the period from January to April. In terms of different sectors, the manufacturing industry grew by 1.0%, while the production and supply of electricity, heat, gas, and water increased by 10.9%. However, the mining industry experienced a decline of 6.7%. As for specific industries, the overall growth rate was observed in 53.8% of the major sectors in the province.

High-level industrial investment sustained

During the first five months of the year, fixed asset investment in Guangdong increased by 5.1% year-on-year. Industrial investment remained at a high level, with a growth rate of 24.0%. Specifically, investment in the mining industry surged by 111.8%, while investment in the manufacturing industry increased by 20.6%. Investments in emerging sectors of manufacturing grew rapidly, with a 23.6% increase in high-tech manufacturing and a 20.7% increase in advanced manufacturing. 

Infrastructure investment also showed substantial growth at 11.4%, including a 24.2% increase in the investment in electricity and heat production and supply, and a 19.9% increase in investment in public facility management.

Sales growth rate continues to increase

From January to May, the total retail sales of consumer goods in the province reached 1.93 trillion yuan, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 8.3%. This indicates a 0.8 percentage point improvement compared to the period from January to April.

The sales momentum for upgraded consumer goods has been sustained, with notable growth in the retail sales of cosmetics (15.2%), precious metals and jewelry (6.0%), books and magazines (9.5%), and communication equipment (12.4%).

Noticeable growth in passenger transportation

During the first five months, the volume of freight transportation in Guangdong increased by 3.3% year on year, showing a 1.0 percentage point improvement compared to the period from January to April. Volumes of waterway freight and civil aviation freight grew by 7.7% and 6.4% respectively. The volume of cargo turnover increased by 4.2%, marking a 1.4 percentage point increase in growth. The cargo throughput at ports increased by 6.6%, with a 0.2 percentage point improvement, while container throughput decreased by 2.1%, narrowing the decline by 0.2 percentage points.

Passenger transportation in the province experienced substantial growth as well. From January to May, passenger volume increased by 72.2%, with a 5.8 percentage point improvement compared to the period from January to April. Notably, railway, waterway, and civil aviation passenger volumes grew by 104.3%, 364.2%, and 135.9% respectively. Passenger turnover increased by 112.9%, marking a growth rate improvement of 14.2 percentage points.

Overall, these positive economic indicators in Guangdong province reflect a continuing recovery and highlight the resilience and growth potential of the region's economy.

广东：2023年前5月经济运行延续恢复向好态势

6月21日，广东省统计局发布了2023年前5月经济运行数据。前5月，广东经济运行延续恢复向好态势。

工业生产增速小幅回升

1—5月，全省规模以上工业增加值1.55万亿元，同比增长1.4%，增速比1—4月提高0.6个百分点。分门类看，制造业增加值增长1.0%，电力、热力、燃气及水生产和供应业增长10.9%，采矿业下降6.7%。分行业看，全省在产的行业大类增长面53.8%。

工业投资维持高位运行

1—5月，全省固定资产投资同比增长5.1%。分领域看，工业投资维持高位运行，完成投资增长24.0%，其中，采矿业投资增长111.8%，制造业投资增长20.6%。制造业新动能投资较快增长，高技术制造业投资增长23.6%，先进制造业投资增长20.7%。

基础设施投资增长11.4%，其中，电力、热力生产和供应业投资增长24.2%，公共设施管理业投资增长19.9%。

市场销售增速持续加快

1—5月，全省社会消费品零售总额1.93万亿元，同比增长8.3%，增速比1—4月提高0.8个百分点。

消费升级类商品零售增势持续，其中，化妆品类零售额增长15.2%，金银珠宝类增长6.0%，书报杂志类增长9.5%，通讯器材类增长12.4%。

客运增长势头明显

1—5月，全省货运量同比增长3.3%，增速比1—4月提高1.0个百分点。其中，水路、民航货运量分别增长7.7%、6.4%。货物周转量增长4.2%，增速提高1.4个百分点。港口货物吞吐量增长6.6%，增速提高0.2个百分点；港口集装箱吞吐量下降2.1%，降幅收窄0.2个百分点。

1—5月，全省客运量增长72.2%，增速比1—4月提高5.8个百分点，其中，铁路、水路、民航客运量分别增长104.3%、364.2%和135.9%；旅客周转量增长112.9%，增速提高14.2个百分点。
