On May 28, 2023, the Guangdong Ecological Belt Triathlon kicked off in Tongsha Ecological Park, Dongguan City. The competition attracted more than 18 triathlon associations from 18 cities including Dongguan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Xiamen with over 600 athletes, among which there are 26 foreign competitors from countries such as France, Australia, and Mexico who live in the Greater Bay Area.
It is said that the competition includes three sections: swimming, cycling, and running, with a total distance of about 51.5 kilometers: 1.5 km of swimming, 40 km of cycling, and 10 km of running. The competition has divided all the athletes into two groups: the standard group and the relay group, and their gender and age are also taken into consideration for the awards.
After fierce competition, Australian male athlete Miliner Todd became the first competitor to cross the finish line with a score of 2:12:01 hours. Female athlete Fan Xiaoyan won first place in the women's group with a score of 2:34:42 hours. Luo Yanwei, Huang Zhiwei, and Wang Haizhao won the championship of the relay group.
To ensure competitors' safety, they must submit a medical examination report issued by a secondary hospital or above within six months before the competition (or certificates of the marathon, cross-country running, and triathlon within six months) and a qualification for swimming in deep water (or triathlon completion certificate, swimming competition certificate or lifeguard certificate, etc). If competitors do not have such qualifications, a test for swimming in deep water is needed.
During the competition, there were rescue facilities and services such as paddle escorts throughout the swimming course to assist athletes in emergencies. The main venue, cycling track, and running track were also equipped with professional medical centers and ambulances to provide medical services. First aid teams with rich rescue experience patrolled the track and provided emergency medical assistance to athletes in case of any accidents.
It is reported that triathlon is a new type of sports event that combines open water swimming, cycling and running, and has strict requirements for the competition environment. "It was quite comfortable to finish the competition. Firstly, the temperature today was suitable, and secondly, the environment here is quite good. When swimming, I felt that the water quality was good. I could even see egrets flying here." Athlete Chen Yongyang said.
The relevant person in charge said that Dongguan has huge potential in the water economy. At present, we can make good use of the achievements in water conservancy in Dongguan like developing cultural and tourism related to water and promoting water economy in different forms to share the fruits of development with more people, thus enhancing their sense of happiness and achievement.
