On May 18th, the third edition of the Vocational Skills Competition of Guangdong (Shenzhen division) kicked off, drawing over 500 skilled contestants. The event unfolded as a spectacular showcase of expertise.
Big data program attended by Ph.D. and Master's Graduates
One notable highlight of the competition was the integration of new professions, expanding beyond traditional industrial occupations.
In the big data program, participants swiftly tapped away at their keyboards, engrossed in constructing the fundamental modules of big data systems.
The program stood out as the only new section in this year's provincial competition, also earning the distinction of being the "most academically advanced" category. The event drew nine contestants, including one Ph.D. holder and three master's degree holders, making a total of seven participants with bachelor's degrees or higher.
In the segment, the assessment standards incorporated both international competition benchmarks and practical industry requirements of China, with an emphasis on evaluating the application of big data. Participants were expected to demonstrate proficiency in various tasks, including deploying and managing big data platforms, offline data processing, data mining and analysis, data collection and real-time computing, data visualization, and comprehensive analysis.
Design a new boss for a 3D digital game within 15 hours
With the explosive growth of the gaming industry in recent years, 3D digital games have been continuously released. The WorldSkills Competition, which is famed as the "Skill Olympics", has designated "3D Digital Game Art" as one of its important competition categories.
In this competition, participants were tasked with designing an antagonist boss from scratch within 15 hours, using the art style and the background of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Adding an extra twist, the 3D Digital Game Art project's chief judge, Ye Weizhong, revealed that contestants were required to incorporate features of two creatures: turtles and frogs.
Following the standards of the WorldSkills Competition, the evaluation criteria focused on participants' understanding of aesthetic design principles, such as color, proportion, structure, and form, as well as their proficiency in software applications. The competition consisted of three assessment modules: conceptual design, detail description, 3D modeling and sculpting, UV mapping, texture painting, and producing the final render.
Within two hours, participants needed to determine the artistic style, create a conceptual design using computer software, and write detailed description document. Subsequently, they had seven hours to produce a three-dimensional model, enriching its details using sculpting tools. Finally, in the remaining six hours, participants had to unwrap the UV maps, create a full set of physically based rendering (PBR) textures, and render the final output.
Ye Weizhong emphasized that in real-world work settings, a task like this would typically require a team to work for a week.
Boss
