Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited South Korea on May 7th for a summit with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. At the summit, Yoon told Kishida that "we must get rid of the thinking that 'we cannot promote future cooperation without clearing historical issues'." This statement was strongly criticized by South Korean netizens, and some people warned Yoon: "The nation that forgets the history has no future."
According to reports, Kishida told Yoon during the summit that he was pleased with the resumption of "shuttle diplomacy" between Japan and South Korea. Yoon is reported to say "In less than two months after (our) first summit in Tokyo, the improvement in South Korea-Japan relations has emerged obviously. I feel responsible for creating a better bilateral relationship than in previous eras."
Yoon also advocated that "we must get rid of the thinking that 'we cannot promote future cooperation without clearing historical issues'" and "look forward to Kishida's visit becoming a meaningful step in future cooperation between the two countries."
Yoon's remarks on historical issues have attracted the attention of Japanese and South Korean media. Japanese right-wing media Sankei Shimbun claimed that this statement represented "Yoon has drawn a line with the previous diplomacy that demanded Japan's apology for World War II, and reaffirmed his policy of advancing South Korea-Japan relations ".
On the other hand, the Hanyoreh published an article on its website on May 7th entitled "A Year without Diplomacy: selling 'history' to Kishida and 'peace' to Biden", accusing Yoon's government of "losing history and peace while having outdated ideas."
Yoon's latest remarks also sparked anger from South Korean netizens. Some netizens commented, "The problem is not about clearing historical issues but Yoon's nonsense under the background of Japan's various provocations of historical issues and the outbreak of textbook issues. Yoon is a traitor."
Other South Korean netizens even warned Yoon that, "Is Yoon conscious when he speaks? Please compare Germany and Japan with common sense."
