French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in China yesterday for a state visit from April 5 to April 7, during which he will also visit Guangzhou in Guangdong province. Macron's visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between France and China.
As part of the ongoing cultural exchange between the two countries, Hu Xiaoyu, a joint doctoral student from Sun Yat-sen University and Université Toulouse-Jean-Jaurès, expressed his hopes to contribute to promoting cultural exchange between China and France. In a recent interview with reporters, Hu highlighted the frequent cultural exchanges and extensive cooperation between the two nations and expressed his desire to apply his academic knowledge to further enhance the cultural exchange between China and France.
Hu Xiaoyu, a PhD student at Sun Yat-sen University's Chinese Department and the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, has been studying anthropology at Université Toulouse-Jean-Jaurès in France from 2020 to 2022. During his time in France, he traveled to many cities in Europe. Hu Xiaoyu said, "Most French people are interested in China, but they have limited access to information about China."
As French President Emmanuel Macron visits China, humanistic exchanges will be a highlight of his trip, with a group of artists and filmmakers accompanying him to Beijing. Hu Xiaoyu believes that promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and France can greatly benefit from the sharing of intangible cultural heritage.
"The exchange of intangible cultural heritage between China and France is extensive. During the Chinese New Year, many parts of France hold lantern festivals, inviting artisans from Zigong, Sichuan Province, to create various traditional Chinese-themed lanterns. During the Chinese New Year , the Teochew Association in France organizes the Teochew Qinglong Temple Fair (Ying Dalaoye) in the 13th arrondissement of Paris , featuring colourful parades with traditional costumes. In addition, Tai Chi and acupuncture, two intangible cultural heritage projects, are very popular in France."
Meanwhile, many French intangible cultural heritage skills are also deeply influencing people's lives. Hu Xiaoyu said,"The familiar French red wine, baguette bread, Provence soap, Grasse perfume, Louis Vuitton handbags, and other products are all supported by intangible cultural heritage and culture."
Hu Xiaoyu believes that the integration of intangible cultural heritage into people's daily lives can reflect the cultural psychology of the people. By understanding each other's cultural psychology through intangible cultural heritage, and using things that can easily evoke empathy from the other party to attract them, one can better tell their own story and gain the other's understanding.
"I hope that more Chinese intangible cultural heritage can go abroad, and more French intangible cultural heritage can come in, to promote in-depth cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and France," Hu Xiaoyu said.
