The One-Thousand-Angle Light is a lantern with a thousand lamps. In Cantonese dialects, One-Thousand-Angle Light is a homonym for Qiangeding (one thousand people), which means that the population will grow prosperously. One-Thousand-Angle Light has a long history, large volume and exquisite craftsmanship, and thus is hailed not only as the treasure of Dongguan’s folk handicrafts but also as “the best lantern in China”. As a folk handicraft, One-Thousand-Angle Light can only be found in Dongguan, and there are only three left. Legend has it that when Zhao Meirong, young sister of Zhao Kuangyin, Emperor Taizu of Song, was living in Dongguan, she taught local craftsmen how to make the lantern based solely on her memory of the style of the palace lantern.
