The world's first saucer-shaped aircraft was unveiled in Shenzhen on September 16th, as the 4th Future Air Traffic and eVTOL Aircraft Innovation Conference 2026 opened in the city.

Developed by Shenzhen Smart Drone UAV Co., Ltd., the saucer-shaped aircraft drew considerable attention. The company representative said the design was chosen from the outset with flight safety in mind, with the saucer-shaped body enclosing the rotors. The aircraft is primarily intended for low-altitude sightseeing in scenic areas and performances at large-scale events.

In the passenger mobility sector, lightweight models such as EHang's EH216S, Zero Gravity's ZGONE (Quefei) and Yivtol's S-ZERO feature mature technology and strong stability. They are suited to everyday applications such as urban low-altitude sightseeing, short-distance commuting and low-altitude cultural tourism, and have substantial experience in commercial deployment. For medium and long-distance intercity travel and high-end general aviation markets, heavy-payload, long-endurance models such as AutoFlight's V2000EM Prosperity, Vertaxi's 2-ton-class passenger-carrying eVTOL M1 and United Aircraft's Lanying R6000 offer distinct advantages. Optimized propulsion systems and aerodynamic designs help extend their flight range and improve safety, making them suitable for more demanding uses such as intercity commuting, emergency rescue and business aviation.

The unveiling of the full range of models highlights the major strides China's eVTOL industry has made, from technology research and prototype development to commercial deployment and a broad range of applications. China's homegrown intelligent manufacturing for the low-altitude economy is rapidly entering a new phase of large-scale, diversified and commercial development.
