The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will open in Shenzhen this November. This year marks the 35th anniversary of China's accession to APEC and the third time China will host the meeting. In a recent interview with Yangcheng Evening News, Wang Wen, dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RUC), said that China has made an indelible contribution to prosperity in the Asia-Pacific within the APEC framework over the past 35 years. He added that the 2026 APEC meeting in Shenzhen will be crucial to APEC's future development.

APEC has delivered tangible benefits to businesses. Trade facilitation measures have lowered the cost of doing business across borders, streamlined procedures and helped remove bottlenecks in customs clearance. Paperless trade and cross-border data sharing are among such measures. In 2025, China saw a marked increase in its exports of high-tech products to other APEC economies. This measure has also helped many specialized and sophisticated enterprises that produce new and unique products gain access to Asia-Pacific markets, benefiting foreign trade businesses more broadly.
The benefits for ordinary people are equally visible. First, international travel has become more convenient. As APEC continues to advance regional connectivity, people can also experience a wide range of international cultural activities locally without having to travel abroad. Second, employment options have become more diverse. APEC has promoted cooperation in advanced manufacturing and the digital economy, driving continued job growth in sectors such as intelligent robotics and digital health. This has enabled ordinary people to access opportunities generated by cutting-edge industries across the Asia-Pacific close to home.
"Every achievement made through APEC cooperation will ultimately translate into more convenient travel, a wider range of consumer choices and better development opportunities. These benefits will permeate our daily lives and reach every ordinary person.”
