On August 4th, "Red Beans of the South, Voices across the Seas: A Historical and Cultural Exhibition of Overseas Chinese and Cantonese Opera" opened at the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum.

The exhibition brings together 120 items (sets) of treasured artifacts from four cultural institutions and private collections, offering a comprehensive overview of Cantonese opera's development from its origins in Lingnan to its spread overseas, where it became closely intertwined with the history of overseas Chinese communities.

The exhibits cover a wide range of categories, including Cantonese opera costumes, musical instruments, playbills and vinyl records, allowing visitors to glimpse the century-old journey of Cantonese opera as it expanded beyond China.

The exhibition also traces the historical connections between Cantonese opera and revolutionary movements as well as the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, featuring a selection of related artifacts.Among them, a 1933 playbill from the Grand Theatre in San Francisco, a certificate of commemoration for frontline soldiers, and a commemorative badge of the 1941 "One Bowl of Rice" Movement bear witness to the patriotic dedication of Cantonese opera performers such as LiangShaojia and Kwan Tak‑hing during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

“南国红豆 四海乡音”华侨华人与粤剧历史文化展开幕 

逾百藏品讲述粤剧“出海”史

8月4日，“南国红豆 四海乡音”华侨华人与粤剧历史文化展在广州华侨博物馆开展。

展览汇聚四家文博机构的馆藏精品文物和民间收藏家的个人珍藏共120件（套）藏品，系统勾勒出粤剧从岭南本土萌芽发展，到走向海外与华侨华人命运交织的恢宏历史画卷。

本次展览展品类型丰富，包括粤剧戏服、乐器、戏桥、黑胶唱片等，观众可以从中窥见百年前粤剧“出海”之路。

展览系统梳理了粤剧与革命、抗战的相关历史，并展出相关主题藏品。其中，1933年旧金山大舞台戏院戏桥、慰劳前方将士纪念证、1941年“一碗饭运动”纪念章等藏品展现了靓少佳、关德兴等一众粤剧艺人抗日救国的赤诚担当。
