On July 23rd, the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics released the province's economic performance data for the first half of the year. During the period, Guangdong's gross domestic product (GDP) reached 7.23 trillion yuan, up 4.5% year on year at constant prices. The province's economy accounted for approximately 10.4% of the national total during the same period, maintaining its position as the largest provincial economy in China.

More noteworthy than the overall economic size is the profound change taking place in the composition of growth. In the first half of the year, the industrial, financial and information services sectors together contributed more than 70% of Guangdong's economic growth, with industry alone accounting for 44%, making it the primary growth engine. The value added of the advanced manufacturing sector increased by 6.9%, while high-tech manufacturing grew by 11.1%. These sectors accounted for 57.2% and 35.8%, respectively, of the province's industrial output above the designated size, up 1.8 and 2.8 percentage points from the same period last year.
Output of "Guangdong smart manufacturing" products, including industrial robots, 3D printing equipment and integrated circuits, maintained double-digit growth, rising by 34.2%, 51.8% and 29.7%, respectively. Green products also recorded strong momentum, with output of new energy vehicles and lithium-ion batteries increasing by 48.4% and 32.2%, respectively. The optimization and upgrading of the industrial structure have strengthened the foundation of Guangdong's economy while injecting innovative vitality into high-quality development.
External markets also remained robust. In the first half of the year, Guangdong's total imports and exports of goods reached 5.49 trillion yuan, exceeding 5 trillion yuan for the first time in the same period of any year, up 20.8% year on year. The province accounted for 21.6% of China's total foreign trade and contributed 25.6% of the country's overall foreign trade growth. Exports of electromechanical products totaled 2.27 trillion yuan, an increase of 16%, accounting for more than 70% of the province's total exports. Among them, integrated circuit exports reached 266.7 billion yuan, up 61.4%. Exports of drones, high-end machine tools and industrial robots increased by 24.6%, 20.1% and 16.8%, respectively, indicating that high value-added products are becoming the main drivers of Guangdong's export growth.
