The welcome forum for the 2026 Global Writers in Guangdong Program was held at the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute on July 10th. The afternoon sun blazed bright, mirroring the warmth radiating from this "miracle city" as it welcomed seven writers from APEC member economies, including Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Mexican writer Manuel Becerra delivered remarks on behalf of the participating writers. After spending several days exploring Shenzhen, he said he had become increasingly convinced that, from a global perspective, China was steadily consolidating its status as a major global power.Becerra expressed his understanding of literature in poetic terms. Citing a Mexican saying "Las palabras se las lleva el viento,"Becerra added that the breeze could also carry stories across mountains and seas and far and wide, and that this was how legends were born. Becerra said he was looking forward to the two-month field visitsahead.

During a break in the forum, South Korean writer Lee Byung-ryul spoke with reporters about his travels across China. He has visited nearly 50 cities in China. When asked about Guangdong, he said what fascinated him most was wandering through the narrow corners of Guangzhou's old neighborhoods in search of different local food markets. In his view, these markets offered the most authentic glimpse of everyday life. Earlier that morning, Lee had boarded the Shenzhen Metro alone before strolling through one of the city's commercial districts. Two local women struck up a conversation with him. After learning that he was a South Korean, they then jokingly asked whether he was an "oppa" working in Hong Kong. Lee said he hoped to encounter more unexpected and delightful moments like this during the upcoming field visit.
