Following the recent release of the Action Plan for the Coordinated Development of Brain-Computer Interface Science, Technology and Industry in Guangdong Province (2026–2030), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Industry Innovation Alliance was officially established in Guangzhou on July 2nd. The alliance has 124 founding members, covering the full spectrum of industry, academia, research, application, and finance.
In the field of rehabilitation therapy, brain-controlled upper and lower limb training systems have already been deployed in several hospitals across Guangdong. When patients imagine movements such as "raising a hand," "grasping," or "walking," the systems can decode brain signals in real time and drive exoskeletons or robotic arms to assist them in completing the movements.
In the field of assisted living, South China Brain-computer Interface Technology Co., Ltd.'s "Brain-Computer Smart Nursing System" can help users with physical disabilities independently control electric hospital beds, curtains, televisions, lights, air conditioners, and other devices.
On the consumer side, EEG biofeedback therapy devices allow children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to "battle with concentration" in games, while wearable mindfulness meditation devices can help users ease anxiety, relieve tinnitus, and prevent motion sickness and seasickness. Brain-computer interfaces are moving from clinical medical applications toward the mass consumer market.
According to the Action Plan, Guangdong's key targets by 2030 include cultivating 100 new BCI technology companies, developing more than 10 hit non-invasive BCI products, and creating 100 exemplary BCI application scenarios. In the medical field, the province aims to establish 200 BCI wards and provide services for more than 500,000 patient visits cumulatively. The core BCI industry is expected to reach 10 billion yuan, while related upstream and downstream industries are projected to reach 100 billion yuan.
