On June 29th, the melody of "Auld Lang Syne" filled the campus of Guangdong University of Technology as 36 Chinese and American students joined hands to sing together. Seven days earlier, 36 young participants from the University of California, Riverside, the University of Washington, Ball State University and Guangdong University of Technology had gathered in Guangzhou for a week-long study tour focusing on climate governance and green, low-carbon development.

Johsue Cantu II from the University of California, Riverside, was particularly impressed by the measures taken to protect the Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis) during the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. "The bridge not only connects urban economies, but its design and construction also fully consider the protection of endangered species, demonstrating China's commitment to ecological conservation in major infrastructure projects," he said.

Katherine Grace Wilcox from Ball State University brought her own binoculars all the way from the United States. Birdwatching is her greatest passion, and she had been looking forward to the visit ever since she learned that Hengqin National Wetland Park was included in the itinerary. "There are many bird species in Asia that we do not have in the United States. I feel lucky to add them to my 'life list,'" Wilcox said. "This place creates a space where birds can breed and thrive, while also allowing people to appreciate them."

Kirstin Paige West from the University of Washington said she was impressed by the local natural environment. "Here, I can feel the fresh air and see flowing water systems. Where I live, there are more enclosed lakes, and the water does not flow," she said. "I hope to build connections with young people here and learn from them. It is a two-way process of learning and knowledge sharing. I am also eager to learn more about China's innovation and technology. I am amazed by how AI has been integrated into these climate projects."
