Cross-boundary travel in GBA continues to boom during May Day holiday

During this year's May Day holiday, a rich lineup of concerts and other cultural and tourism events across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, together with the 139th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair), fueled strong demand for cross-boundary trips among Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) residents. Hong Kong and Macao residents headed north for leisure and shopping, while Chinese mainland residents traveled south to watch performances and enjoy holidays. Shenzhen's Huanggang and Futian ports continued to see peak two-way exit-entry passenger flows.

According to statistics from the Shenzhen General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection, from May 1st to 3 p.m. on May 5th, the Huanggang Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Station processed a total of 1.258 million passenger trips through Huanggang and Futian ports, including 966,000 passenger trips through Futian Port alone. It also inspected 46,000 vehicle trips, up 6% and 10% year on year, respectively.

Among the passenger trips, Chinese mainland residents accounted for more than 608,000, Hong Kong and Macao residents for over 620,000, and foreign travelers for 20,000. On May 2nd alone, the station handled more than 337,000 exit-entry passenger trips, with several figures setting new highs since the resumption of normal travel.

During the May Day holiday, Shenzhen's Huanggang and Futian ports continued to experience peak two-way exit-entry passenger flows. Large numbers of Chinese mainland travelers went to Hong Kong to attend concerts by popular performers, visit technology and innovation exhibitions, take part in family-friendly science activities, stroll along Victoria Harbour, check in at cultural landmarks, and enjoy shopping and vacationing. Shenzhen, for its part, attracted many Hong Kong and Macao residents as well as foreign travelers to the city and other parts of the Pearl River Delta area for leisure and consumption, thanks to its convenient transport infrastructure, trendy AI products, delicious food, and many other aspects.

In particular, nighttime exit-entry passenger flows have been rising steadily at Huanggang Port, which operates around the clock. Statistics show that since the beginning of this year, nighttime passenger traffic at the port, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, has increased 14% year on year on weekdays and 7% on weekends. Cross-boundary nightlife has not only enriched leisure options for residents of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, but also become a new driver of deeper integration, stronger two-way engagement and economic growth in the GBA.
