Guangzhou reported a year-on-year GDP growth of 6.0% in the first quarter, according to data released on April 23rd. The figure exceeds both the national and provincial averages, ranking first among China's first-tier cities and marking the strongest start for the city in the past five years.

Several landmark indicators reflect the high-quality growth behind the 6% figure. In the first quarter, the city's fixed asset investment exceeded 200 billion yuan for the first time, with the growth rate hitting a 33-month high. Total retail sales of consumer goods rose 6.6%, the fastest among China's five international consumption center cities. The added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size grew 6.5%, the highest quarterly growth since 2023. Meanwhile, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's passenger throughput returned to No.1 nationwide. These top rankings and new highs prove that the Q1 growth is neither a partial nor accidental rebound, but an all-round improvement across multiple fields to maintain a positive trend.
In the first quarter, Guangzhou's automobile manufacturing industry turned positive at 5.5%. As manufacturing rebounded, the service sector also maintained solid momentum. The added value of Guangzhou’s tertiary industry increased 6.1%, and that of the financial sector rose 8.3%. Revenue of technology promotion and application services jumped 59.1%, while revenue of the internet and software industry grew 12.9%. The accelerated transformation and upgrading of manufacturing is creating abundant new opportunities for producer services.

Among this, investment in high-tech manufacturing sectors rose by 25.5%, while investment in information transmission, software and information technology services increased by 120%.
In the first quarter, the output value of private industrial enterprises grew by 15.3%, and the growth rate of the value added of the private sector exceeded GDP growth by 2.9 percentage points. Phase IV of CanSemi Technology Inc's project was officially launched, while AstraZeneca signed a memorandum of understanding with Guangzhou authorities. Meanwhile, the number of newly started projects increased by 26.9%, reflecting that market entities are delivering a solid vote of confidence in Guangzhou with substantial investment.
