'Blue lanes' go viral! Why does Qingyuan keep making headlines?

Recently, eye-catching "blue lanes" at the intersection near the Fengcheng Shijia residential community in Qingcheng District, Qingyuan, have gone viral online. Running parallel to the crosswalk, the lanes are designated exclusively for e-bikes and bicycles. They are part of a new traffic-management model introduced by Qingyuan police: pedestrians use the central crosswalk, while non-motor vehicles pass through the "blue lanes" on either side, separating pedestrians from non-motorized vehicles and keeping each in its designated route.

This was not the first time Qingyuan traffic police had made headlines this year. During the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush, as homebound and return traffic surged, they introduced a series of innovative measures on the Qingyuan section of the Xuchang–Guangzhou Expressway, including tidal lanes, tidal service areas, and temporary lane borrowing. In some cases, police vehicles even escorted motorists to use opposite-direction lanes in a lawful and controlled manner, greatly improving traffic efficiency and earning widespread praise from drivers and online users alike.

During the 2026 Qingyuan Marathon, to minimize the impact of traffic controls on residents' travel, Qingyuan traffic police introduced a "pendulum-style" crossing method. By setting up temporary pedestrian refuge islands along the route and guiding waiting pedestrians to cross during gaps between runners, they enabled staggered pedestrian crossings. The practice was even reposted and praised by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, who called it "a model of people-centered smart urban governance."

From legally authorized contra-flow driving in tidal-lane operations, to "pendulum-style" crossings along the marathon route, to "blue lanes" that separate pedestrians from non-motorized vehicles, these measures have won widespread praise online not only for their innovation, but also for the meticulous care and public-minded spirit behind them.
