On January 9th, China Media Group announced that the fourth China Media Group (CMG) Annual Chinese TV Drama Ceremony would be held outside Beijing for the first time, with Zhuhai confirmed as its host city for the next six consecutive years. Around the same time, members of the Meitan Sub-group of the Zunyi Working Group of the Guangdong-Guizhou Cooperation Task Force have already begun engagement in Zhuhai to explore new opportunities. In recent years, Meitan County in Guizhou Province has embraced a media-driven approach, using the micro-drama sector as a breakthrough point to transform its cultural resources and ecological strengths into tangible economic and development advantages.

Media-driven approach takes Meitan stories beyond the mountains
To help Meitan stories reach audiences far beyond its mountains and break away from the increasingly homogenized competition among filming locations, scenic beauty alone is not enough. What is needed is a media-driven mindset. Xia Yu, a Zhuhai official currently serving in Meitan on a temporary assignment and a member of the Standing Committee of the Meitan County Party Committee, said that by riding the momentum of media-driven development and the Zhuhai-Zunyi cooperation, Meitan is seeking to overcome its geographic constraints, focus on high-quality micro-dramas, and make the leap in value from a "hidden mountain gem" to an "online hit."

The breathtaking vistas of vast tea plantations, combined with the everyday vibrancy of more than 100,000 residential homes in northern Guizhou, turn the county into a natural film studio where the story unfolds the moment one opens a window. This perfectly aligns with modern film and television's pursuit of instant visual impact: without elaborate build-up, the landscape and architecture offer built-in storytelling power that speaks directly to the emotional core. Adding to its appeal, Meitan is often dubbed "China's Little Switzerland," offering a European-style setting without going abroad.
Rekindling Meitan's bond with Zhejiang University through media-driven approach
Meitan is also a natural, open-air film and television production base with historical settings. In 1940, after four relocations, Zhejiang University arrived in Meitan. During the seven years it spent there, faculty and students continued teaching and research on this tranquil land, while the lights of Meitan Confucian Temple illuminated the academic pursuits of scientific luminaries such as Su Buqing, Wang Ganchang and Tan Jiazhen. According to statistics, 52 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Li Zhengdao and Wang Ganchang, studied or worked in Meitan, where the "Qiushi Spirit(the spirit of seeking truth)" has educated and influenced generations of residents.

Meitan hopes to use film and television as a medium to breathe new life into this deep-rooted bond in the new era. The scholarly spirit forged during this special historical period, together with the close ties between local residents and Zhejiang University faculty and students, forms a unique treasure trove for film and television creation, offering rare and valuable source material for the industry.
"Sets are unnecessary here; history itself is the best backdrop." Today, this land of Meitan, which once safeguarded the sparks of Chinese science, is charting a new path through the development of the film and television industry, using light and shadow to sustain its enduring bond with Zhejiang University.
