For over half a century, groups of doctors from Guangdong have crossed mountains and seas to safeguard lives with compassion and skill. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, and the Guangdong medical team has once again embarked on its mission. Doctors from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University have recently been shuttling between multiple hospitals in Suva, the administrative capital of Fiji. They're committed to performing surgeries, providing training and free clinics, and writing a new chapter in China's overseas medical aid under the shadowless lamps.

On the first day of the reporter's arrival at the Ophthalmology Center of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, the largest public hospital in Fiji, the waiting area was already filled with patients awaiting consultations from the Chinese doctors. Due to dietary habits and living conditions, residents suffer significantly from diabetes, cataracts, and cardiovascular diseases. The advanced treatments for cataracts and cardiovascular conditions provided by the Guangdong medical team, along with their extensive experience in managing chronic diseases, are of significant value to the local community.
This marks the tenth visit by the "Bright Journey" medical team from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center to Fiji. In just the first two days, they performed an average of over 40 surgeries daily while treating an additional 60 to 70 patients each day.

At the main campus of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, a few kilometers from the Ophthalmology Center, doctors from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital were running around nonstop. The three specialists in spinal surgery, cardiology, and endocrinology arrived in Fiji this September for a three-month medical aid mission. The Guangdong doctors transformed this three-month cycle into a long and meaningful journey, performing one more surgery and treating one more patient whenever possible, and dedicating themselves to cultivating a "local medical team that stays behind."
After witnessing the entire process of a cataract operation successfully performed by the Chinese medical team, Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji's Minister for Health and Medical Services, expressed his gratitude for China's medical aid before local media. He noted that what is happening here is not only a blessing for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services but also for the people of Fiji, and that he hoped the citizens would recognize the remarkable work the Chinese doctors have done here.
At the 2025 "Understanding China" Conference held recently, a Fijian official mentioned in an interview that he had seen news reports of "Chinese doctors helping restore sight for a Fijian grandmother." He added that China always delivers on its promises, and he is grateful for Guangdong's continued medical aid to Fiji.
