A true story about "a phone lost in a gravel pile in the Wusun uninhabited area three years ago, unexpectedly recovered after traveling thousands of miles" has recently drawn attention online. On July 19th, 2022, Ms. Qiu from Huizhou, along with her then-boyfriend (now husband) and a fellow traveler, set out on a hike along the Wusun Ancient Trail in Xinjiang. During the trek, they accidentally ventured into an area of loose rocks with no discernible path.
"My partner placed my phone on a rock to free his hands for taking photos. We walked only a few meters forward, but when we turned back, the phone was gone—it most likely slipped into a gap between the rocks," Ms. Qiu recalled. The three searched the rocky debris repeatedly for over an hour without success. For safety reasons, they had no choice but to give up.
On November 15th this year, Ms. Qiu unexpectedly received a message from the property management office of her community. The message said that a man had found a phone while hiking in Xinjiang and included a photo for her to confirm.
The man who brought the phone "back into the light" was Mr. Guo, a hiking enthusiast from Shenzhen. In July 2025, he and his teammates embarked on a trek along the Wusun Ancient Trail. On July 9th, he stumbled upon a steep slope covered in loose rocks and discovered the phone partially buried among them. The key clue to finding the owner was the access card for a residential community in Huizhou attached to the phone case.
After returning to Shenzhen, Mr. Guo attempted to retrieve the SIM card to trace the owner through the carrier, only to be informed that the number had been deactivated. The turning point came in October, when Mr. Guo purchased and renovated a new home in Huizhou. After moving in, he was surprised to discover the residential community was just 4 kilometers from his new home.
On the afternoon of November 15th, Mr. Guo visited the community and contacted Ms. Qiu with the help of the property management. Only then did he learn that the phone had been lost for three years. That evening, Ms. Qiu and her husband invited Mr. Guo to dinner. "We were strangers before, but now we're friends," Ms. Qiu said. "This recovered phone holds a kindness that crossed mountains and seas."
