On the morning of September 3rd, during a grand gathering to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, 90-year-old academician Zhong Nanshan was invited to attend the military parade with the "Medal of the Republic".

"I can be considered a witness to the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression," said Zhong, who was born in 1936. Around the age of two, he had already survived two bombings carried out by the invading Japanese forces. "The first time was in 1937, when Japanese aircraft bombed Nanjing and destroyed my house. I was just over one year oldand was buried under the rubble. My grandmother dug desperately through the rubble to pull me out."
Childhood experiences weighed heavily on Zhong as he stood on the viewing stand at Tiananmen Square during the military parade. "I deeply feel that if one country wants peace, it must be backed by strong military power." The various branches of the armed forces, along with the array of advanced weapons and equipment displayed in the military parade, gave him a palpable sense of strength and confidence.
With many countries' heads of stateand international friends gathering together, Zhong was deeply struck by China's growing circle of friends. "This cohesion is the result of China's strength," he said. "No matter how turbulent international politics may be, the fact that China has so many friends is something to be truly proud of."
"The prosperity and strength of China are the results of generations of hard work, and the future will depend on the continued efforts of the youth," Zhong emphasized. For him, future development must be driven by scientific and technological innovation. "We should not be satisfied with what we have achieved so far. What's more important is that we must have innovations. We are no longer followers in technology but the leaders of the new era."
