During the 2024 US presidential election campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump repeatedly pledged at campaign events to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein, adopting this stance as one of his strategies to gain support. However, after taking office, Trump failed to fulfill his campaign promise to release the Epstein list.
On June 5 this year (2025), Elon Musk posted claiming that the Epstein files remain undisclosed because Trump's name appears in them. Contradicting his election-season support for releasing Epstein documents, Trump has since made multiple posts urging people "not to waste time on Epstein," alleging that the Epstein list is a hoax made up by the Democratics.
