On July 9th, the 2025 "Maritime Guangdong Young Director Support Program" (hereinafter referred to as the Maritime Guangdong Program) hosted by the Yangcheng Evening News Group officially announced the top 20 short film projects. This year, the Maritime Guangdong Program received a total of 632 valid project proposals from around the world. After review, 587 proposals were deemed eligible, covering feature films, documentaries, experimental films, animations, and cross-media creations. This year's selection shows significant growth in international participation, female director representation, and thematic diversity, while continuing to deeply explore local narratives from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In terms of gender distribution, 46% of the submitted projects were directed by women, representing an 8% increase compared to previous years. Their works are more focused on themes such as bodily autonomy, the pressure of motherhood, and non-sexual intimate relationships, with narratives often concluding with a modern characteristic: "non-reconciliation." Female-themed works accounted for 68% of the total submissions, and the gender ratio of the shortlisted directors was exactly 1:1.

Statistics show that overseas submissions have increased by 30% this year, with proposals from France accounting for the largest share (19%) of the international increase. In addition, there were submissions from directors in Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, with most of their projects addressing topics related to the cultural and historical heritage of the Overseas Chinese Hometowns in Lingnan. Submissions from North America were inclined towards science fiction genres.

In terms of themes, the keywords of the projects or screenplays by young directors are vast and varied, ranging from current social issues such as interpersonal communication, AI, marriage, elderly care, and migrant labor, to classic topics that reflect the creators' ties to family and hometown, such as left-behind children, old cities, and childhood memories. Furthermore, themes related to folk customs and urban landscapes, which carry distinct cultural characteristics in the Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao regions, have also been incorporated into the directors' stories.
