Guangdong launches industrial software major to fill 200,000 talent gap

China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently included industrial software upgrades in the "two new" policy framework, pledging policy and financial support to encourage enterprises to step up investment in this strategic field. Among the 29 newly approved university majors announced by the Ministry of Education this year is one that stands out—industrial software.

As an interdisciplinary field under engineering, industrial software integrates disciplines such as software engineering and artificial intelligence (AI). The major aims to address critical bottlenecks in China's domestically developed industrial software, targeting core areas such as industrial design, production management, and intelligent control. Graduates are expected to enter sectors like new energy vehicles (NEVs), smart equipment, and semiconductors, working in roles such as industrial software R&D and intelligent manufacturing system design.

Experts note that industrial software has become a key enabling technology amid intensifying global industrial competition. Due to the complexity of industrial production systems, industrial software is inherently sophisticated. Qiu Shuiping, CTO of Huawei's industrial software and industrial cloud, stated, "Over the next five years, China will face a talent gap of around 200,000 in this field, with annual demand growing by more than 50%."

Currently, China's industrial software sector is at a critical phase of domestic substitution and breakthrough. Industries such as petroleum, chemicals, and steel aim to complete upgrades of 800,000 sets of industrial operating systems and 2 million sets of industrial software by 2027. As a result, the industrial software major has become one of the most urgently needed fields for talent development.

Leveraging the manufacturing clusters and application scenarios of the Pearl River Delta, two Guangdong universities, Dongguan University of Technology and Guangdong University of Technology, have become the first in the nation to offer industrial software as a major.

Earlier, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education announced the proposed establishment of five provincial-level experimental zones for cultivating industrial software talent. Among them is Sun Yat-sen University's project titled "High-Performance Computing + X: A Pilot Program for Cultivating Top Industrial Software Talent."
