On the afternoon of June 6th, Nastya, a Ukrainian student from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, joined the "2025 Guangdong Lychee Festival and Guangdong Lychee Global Tasting Carnival" as a "Lychee Tasting Officer," diving into the unique Lingnan flavors and cultural charm behind the fruit.
Guangdong is the world's largest lychee-producing region, and the fruit is now in peak season. As Nastya entered the carnival, the aroma and fresh red lychees caught her by surprise. After tasting signature varieties from Gaozhou, Maoming, such as "Guiwei," "Feizixiao," and "Baitangying", she exclaimed, "My favorite is Baitangying. It's super sweet and has such a small ball!"
She was even more amazed by seedless lychees. "It's my first time trying lychees without balls, so convenient to eat!" said Nastya. According to Xian Zipeng from Zungly Agricultural Group, this variety is very popular in the European and American markets. During the lychee season, the US alone imports about 35,000 kilograms annually, with the total for Europe and America reaching around 75,000 kilograms.
Beyond fresh lychees, lychee-based products also left a strong impression. Nastya was full of praise after trying a beverage that blends Guangdong tea with lychee flavor. Zhao Xinzhu, a representative from Heytea, explained that the drink was inspired by the lychee harvest and combines local fruit with traditional tea culture.
As she toured the exhibition, Nastya was drawn to the livestreaming booths and a wide variety of lychee-themed cultural products. As a fan of e-commerce livestreaming, she said she couldn't resist ordering lychees when watching such streams. Among the lychee-themed fridge magnets, round fans, and Guangzhou porcelain plates, she even painted lychee patterns on a plate herself, gaining insight into traditional craftsmanship.
The experience moved Nastya. "A lychee is more than just a fruit. It can be a drink, a cultural creation, and even a cultural bridge," she said, adding that she would take this "sweetness" back to Ukraine and help more people discover lychees and Guangdong.
