【雲上嶺南】Millennium-old Frankincense: A Journey Across the Oceans
飘洋过海的千年乳香
Art and Culture | Did you know the most coveted spice among nobles in the Nanyue Kingdom of the Western Han Dynasty? The answer is frankincense. At Guangzhou's Nanyue King Museum, 26 grams of this 2,000-year-old treasure are preserved—unearthed in 1983 from the Western Han Museum of the Nanyue King Mausoleum. Research confirms it journeyed across oceans via the Maritime Silk Road, arriving from the Red Sea region of Arabia as an exotic luxury. Two millennia later, Yemeni student Jeb from Southern Medical University brought frankincense, a specialty of his homeland, to the museum.
