From December 27th to 29th, the French musical "Notre-Dame de Paris" will perform five consecutive shows at the Guangzhou Opera House, offering audiences an authentic taste of the unique charm of French musicals. This "masterpiece of French drama," adapted from the timeless classic by French literary giant Victor Hugo, pioneered the musical format of "singing through," and was in such high demand during its 2019 visit to Guangzhou that tickets were nearly impossible to obtain. The show is also a significant event in the 2024 China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, once again resonating the legend of the cathedral era for Chinese audiences.
Since its premiere in Paris in 1998, the musical "Notre-Dame de Paris" has enjoyed a successful run for 26 years, featuring powerful and shocking modern music, visually stunning stage settings, and dramatic tension that builds a grand tragic epic. With 55 epic hits, the show incorporates a wealth of pop music elements and ingeniously blends bel canto and rock music together, making it the musical with the most songs in history.
The production has garnered multiple Canadian FELIX Art Awards, including "Drama of the Year," "Best Song of the Year," and "Best-Selling Album of the Year." It has since been translated into 10 languages and has earned itself a Guinness World Record title of "Best-Selling French Musical," becoming the undisputed leader in French musicals and one of the world's four legendary musicals.
In "Notre-Dame de Paris," the characters and scenes are filled with opposition and conflict. Singers express emotions through concrete lyrics, while dancers express emotions through abstract movements, with both singers and dancers on the same stage, simultaneously expressing the internal and external, as well as the concrete and abstract.
In terms of dance movements, the choreography grants dancers a great deal of freedom. Dancers also utilize props such as railings and sticks during their performances, demonstrating extraordinary physical control and delivering a performance that is both infectious and impactful.
