The designation of Macao as a world center for tourism and leisure is a key development goal. In a recent interview with Yangcheng Evening News, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), highlighted the rapid growth of Macao's tourism industry since its return to China. "In 1999, Macao welcomed about 6.6 million visitors. By 2019, this number had surged to 39.4 million. This year, the recovery has been remarkable, reaching approximately 90% of pre-pandemic levels."

The year 2024 marks the fifth anniversary of the implementation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA). Over the past five years, the GBA has accelerated to improve infrastructure connectivity, as well as institutional and policy integration, creating significant opportunities for Macao's tourism industry. Fernandes remarked that the GBA, as a unified region, holds huge potential for tourism development.

"In recent years, more international visitors, in addition to exploring Hong Kong and Macao, have expressed a strong desire to visit mainland cities within the GBA," she noted. "This is particularly true for Southeast Asian tourists, many of whom trace their ancestral roots to Guangdong. They want to witness their hometown's development."

Fernandes emphasized the importance of developing "multi-destination" travel packages by capitalizing on the GBA's advanced transportation network. "The GBA boasts four international airports—Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen—as well as homeports for cruise ships like Nansha Port in Guangzhou and Shekou Port in Shenzhen. We should fully leverage these transportation advantages."

Furthermore, with the implementation of a 144-hour visa-free transit policy at four ports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Fernandes highlighted the convenience for international visitors. "The 144-hour visa-free policy is a major advantage. In 2023, we launched ten new GBA travel routes. Moving forward, we will continue to innovate and offer more diverse travel products."

The "Historic Centre of Macao," featuring a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, is the most ancient, largest, and best-preserved heritage district in China. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005. Complementing this historic charm is Macao's vibrant culinary culture, recognized in 2017 when it was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

Fernandes emphasized that these global recognitionsofheritage and gastronomyare crucial to Macao's identity. In recent years, Macao has undertaken various initiatives to advertisethese international "name cards." In June 2024, the Macao Government Tourism Office will host the first International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao. This innovative event will connect Macao's culinary heritage with the cuisines of 18 countries, positioning Macao as a global platform for gastronomic exchange and boosting its appeal as a travel destination.

To drive innovation, the Macao SAR government has introduced the "Tourism+" strategy, which seeks to integrate tourism with various other sectors. According to Fernandes, this approach has already fostered fruitful collaborations with industries such as health, conventions and exhibitions, education, culture, and sports. Moving forward, Macao plans to explore even broader opportunities for growth.

Fernandes expects the fusion of tourism and sports. "For Macao, sports are a valuable tourism resource," Fernandes noted. "Traditionally, events like dragon boat races attract visitors interested in Chinese culture. The Macao Grand Prix draws racers and fans from around the world, enhancing Macao's global reputation. In 2025, Macao will host events as part of the 15th National Games. In addition to competitive sports, there will be numerous community activities. We aim to use this opportunity to promote Macao's tourism across China."
