On December 12th, the 23rd Guangdong Seed Industry Expo ("Seed Expo")was held in Guangzhou. The exhibition featured a wide range of high-quality varieties, including thin-skinned twisted peppers, juicy cherry tomatoes, sweet and tender fresh corn, and "highly attractive" kale.Over 1,000 renowned Chinese and international seed companies gathered at the event, showcasing more than 5,000 varieties of superior crops.
Since its inception, the Seed Expo has displayed more than 130,000 global crop varieties with unique features, attracting over 1.3 million attendees. It has facilitated deepening global exchanges and cooperation in the seed industry. Each year, over 1,000 exhibitors participate, with nearly 100 technology applications and supporting equipment showcased. New varieties, technologies, equipment, models, and achievements radiate from the Expo, reaching across China and the world.
It is reported that Guangdong has established four major agricultural germplasm resource banks, with a total of 368,000 germplasm samples stored, ranking first in the country for comprehensive storage capacity.
Guangdong Province strongly supports scientific research institutions in tackling major research projects, with significant progress made in key technologies related to seed sources. For example, it has led the way in establishing DNA molecular fingerprint libraries and trait databases for rice, vegetables, pigs, chickens, and waterfowl. The province also pioneered the use of "genome design" methods to cultivate diploid potato inbred lines and hybrid varieties, made continuous breakthroughs in banana mutation breeding, lychee hybridization, and potato hybridization, and created the world's first longan-lychee hybrid variety, "Crispy Honey Longan." Guangdong has also led the world in assembling the largest core breeding group for local pigs and made significant breakthroughs in the breeding of key livestock and poultry species. Additionally, the province achieved breakthroughs in artificial breeding technologies for marine species such as large yellow croaker in the South China Sea, golden trevally, brown-striped mackerel scad, and Chinese bahaba, completing the entire artificial breeding process for sea bass within Guangdong.
